Sigen EV AC Charger – Wiring Plan

Short answer: the charger is powered from the switchboard on its own dedicated circuit – not from the Gateway. The Gateway only talks to it over Ethernet (Cat6). The only Gateway decision is which side of it the circuit sits on (see step 1).
Circuit spec
| Charger | Sigen EV AC Charger 7 kW, single phase, 6–32 A adjustable |
| Protection | 32 A MCB (C-curve) + 30 mA Type A RCD, or a 32 A Type A RCBO. Charger has built-in 6 mA DC leakage detection (RDC-DD), so a Type B is not required. |
| Cable | 6 mm² TPS recommended (charger terminals accept 2.5–6 mm²). Confirm volt drop for the run length – keep under 5 % at 32 A. |
| Comms | Cat6 (Ethernet), RJ45 plug at both ends (T568B, shielded, outdoor-rated if outside, ≤100 m). Charger end: RJ45 socket in the wiring bay. Gateway end: FE2 RJ45 socket inside the Gateway, cable in through the COM gland. Confirmed for the Gateway SP AU (guide v04): FE1 = inverter, FE2 = "Sigen EV AC Charger, inverter, router". Sigen app note scenario #3 = charger → Gateway direct. Wi-Fi is fallback only. |
| Mounting | Bottom cable entry. If top entry is used, unit must be in a sheltered spot. |
Grid side or backup side of the Gateway?
| Grid side (recommended) | Circuit fed from the main switchboard bus, upstream of the Gateway's backup output. Charger stops in a power cut. Solar-surplus charging still works because the Gateway's grid meter/CT sees the charger load. |
| Backup side | Circuit fed from the Gateway's backup/essential output. Charger can run off the battery in an outage – with one battery it will flatten it fast. Only do this if the customer specifically wants it. |
Install steps
- Isolate – main switch off, PV DC isolator off, battery off per Sigen shutdown sequence. Lock out, test dead.
- Switchboard – fit 32 A MCB + Type A RCD (or RCBO) on the grid-side bus. Label "EV CHARGER".
- Run the sub-main – 6 mm² TPS switchboard → charger location. Mechanical protection where exposed; conduit outdoors.
- Mount the charger – on the Sigen bracket, bottom entry, gland the cable.
- Terminate – L, N, E to the charger's AC input terminals. Torque to the figures on the terminal label.
- Set current limit – rotary/DIP switch inside the charger to 32 A (drop to 20–25 A if the board, supply fuse or pole fuse can't carry the full 32 A on top of the house load).
- Cat6 – RJ45 both ends, T568B, shielded. Charger RJ45 socket → Gateway FE2 (FE1 already has the inverter lead). A long factory patch lead is fine. Check link light.
- Re-energise – Sigen start-up sequence (battery, PV, grid), then the new EV MCB. Test RCD trip.
- Commission in mySigen (installer login) – app ≥ v1.9.4. Update inverter + charger firmware first. Add device → scan the charger QR → "Add to existing power station" (the Doel plant). Set in this order: Rated household circuit breaker current (main switch/pole fuse) > Input circuit breaker current (32 A) > Default output charging current. Enable Solar / PV-priority charging mode.
- Test – plug a car in. Confirm the app shows charger kW live, that it throttles when the site hits the import limit, and that it ramps up on solar surplus.
- Paperwork – CoC + ESC, update the single-line diagram, photo the board.
Why hardwire the Cat6 (not Wi-Fi)
Dynamic load control = the Gateway sends the charger a new current limit every few seconds (e.g. "drop to 12 A, the oven is on"). That only works while the link is up. Over Wi-Fi a dropout means the charger either stops or falls back to its own full 32 A with no site limit – either a nuisance or a tripped main fuse. The charger will still charge over Wi-Fi, it just won't be reliably throttled. Cat6 makes the throttling dependable.
